Visit Lizzo’s Favorite Spots Across Houston All in One Weekend

H-Town, stand up!
LizzoRB

Lizzo has been writing and recording in Los Angeles a lot lately. And while you can take the girl out of the south, you can never really take the south out of the girl. “I was born in Detroit — but my most important years, when I was forming, were in Houston. From 10 to college. I’m a little bit Detroit and a little bit Houston. But I’m a lot Houston sometimes. Haha!”

Opening for UK grime rapper, Stormzy — Red Bull Sound Select artist, Lizzo, recently performed at Red Bull Sound Select – an artist development program that delivers the best in new music via concerts each month. Prior to Lizzo’s show-stealing performance, Infinite Legroom sat down with the rising star to discuss some of her favorite spots around Houston. Whether it’s parking lot pimping at the Galleria, grabbing a “nice beav-rage,” or getting lit on Montrose — these are the spots where you might run into Lizzo when she’s in H-Town.

You can keep up with Lizzo’s new music and travels on TwitterFacebookYouTube and Soundcloud.

Shipley's Do-Nuts

“The first thing I would do in Houston is go to Shipley’s Do-Nuts and get a glazed [donut] and a jalapeño-cheese kolache. SHIPLEY’S!”

PlazAmericas (fka Sharpstown Mall)

“Sharpstown Mall is where Mike Jones used to pass out his mixtape. It was less of a mall and more of a social experience. That’s where Johnny Dang, the big jeweler who made all of the grillz, originated. The mall is barely a mall. You walk in and there are some cutouts, some pop-ups, some jewelry stores, and a ton of people just pulling numbers. You don’t really shop there, but you can pull a number or two, get a large Icee, and just have a good day.”

The Third Ward

“The Third Ward is most commonly known because Beyoncé has been repping it super hard, God bless her soul. But the Third Ward is southeast Houston. I lived there when I went to college at the University of Houston. So I know a lot about the très and getting honey butter biscuits at 2am from Whataburger. The très is beautiful. It’s below sea-level and can get very mossy. It can look very forgotten, but also inhabited all at once.”

Warehouse Live

“There’s something about Warehouse Live that feels like you made it and when you’re watching the person on stage it’s like, ‘man, you made it.’ Drake does talk about Warehouse Live a lot and we never get to play Warehouse Live. Well, we actually played the small room at Warehouse Live and I was like, ‘We made it!’ — but there was like nobody in the audience. Yo when I go back I wanna play Warehouse real bad.”

AvantGarden

“AvantGarden is this house with a lot of foliage. It’s an old Victorian house that they transformed into a club. It’s so cool. Honestly, just go to Montrose and get lit.”

Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

“If I were in Houston I would go to Pappadeaux’s on the brunch buffet day and get it all. They got beignets, they got etouffee… they got all of the Louisiana Creole comfort foods.”

notsuoH

NotsuoH is this really trippy place downtown, right next to Dean’s on Main Street. It’s Houston spelled backwards, which kind of takes away the charm. You walk in and it’s very narrow and there are baby doll heads everywhere. It’s very creepy and the stage is deep set. It looks like a junkyard but it’s a bar and a venue.”

Toyota Center

“I grew up in the T-Mac [Tracy McGrady] era. I would rock the jersey dress with matching Air Force Ones. And I did volunteer and work at the All-Star Game when it was in Houston in 2006. That was fun.”

Frenchy's Chicken

“Also I’m not sure how many are still open, but go to Frenchy’s Chicken and get some Frenchy Fries.”

The Galleria

“I miss parking lot pimping at the Galleria. I wanna go to the Galleria and ball. I remember when I was younger I would go to the Galleria and be like, ‘Man, I wish I could afford this. I wish I could afford that.’ So now I would go to the Galleria and buy whatever I wanted. Go shopping and have a little spree.”
