Sultan + Shepard’s Smokers Guide to Amsterdam

Where to get high and what to do after the fact.

Even if you’re just a casual weed smoker, you’ll still want to partake in all of the marijuana-specific activities that Amsterdam has to offer upon visiting. As with anywhere else, however, you need the right information and guide to get you where you want to go. For that, we look no further than Electronic music duo Sultan + Shepard.

Now these guys know a thing or two about both Amsterdam and Mary Jane. Here they take you through the must-experience spots for smokers. From various head shops where you can snag a number of strands, to activities that are great for when you’re high — you know, pigging out, staring at art, etc. — click through the gallery above to get in the know regarding Sultan + Shepard’s favorite locations.

You can keep up with Sultan + Shepard‘s new music and travels on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and SoundCloud.

De Tweede Kamer

This is the best place to buy hash, although it’s really tiny and crammed and smokey, so it’s not the best place to actually stick around and smoke. Our favorite hash in the world- Sheherezade (straight from Morocco)- is only sold here and one other place. There are two kinds, “sunset” and “sunrise” . Sunset is best for late nights, cause it’s heavier, “sunrise” is better for daytime smoking, but both leave you with a great euphoric high that is still pretty functional.

Bushdoktor

The other place in Amsterdam that sells Sheherezade. This is a super trippy coffee shop run by cool Italians with tiny little Alice in Wonderland stairs that go up four stories. Coming back down from the top when you’ve been smoking there for a few hours is always an adventure. They also have some really strong wax, if you’re into that.

Abraxas

The most relaxing coffeeshop in Amsterdam to actually sit down and smoke in. It’s less grungy than most places and the atmosphere is really nice, with two big open areas upstairs that makes it easy to roll up with bigger groups. The music is good and everyone there is always really friendly. We usually take people there who’ve never been to a coffeeshop before, as it’s a pretty good place to start. It gets crowded though if you show up too late.

Dutch Flowers

A cool little coffeeshop right on the canals. It’s really small and the staff are sometimes a little short (probably cause they are sick of stoned tourists), but the coffee and tea there are actually really good. When it’s not too crowded it’s one of the most mellow spots to sit down and smoke one of their pre-rolled spliffs with a great view of the street and the canal. There’s something really chill and peaceful about this place and somehow we always end up there for a couple hours on each trip.

Paradise Seeds

Infamous seed bank that grows most of our favorite weed. It’s a cool place to check out if you’re into genetics of strains (which we are!). The people there are great for info and if you’re into growing it’s a cool place to get some info on how to start.

Dampkring

This place is always crowded, but the interior is pretty amazing. If you can find a time (probably early afternoon) when it’s quiet, this is a great vibey place to start your day. Lots of curved wood and cool low hanging lamps, plus really tasty smoothies. They also have an excellent selection of hash, especially their Nepali hash.

W36

When you’re high, there’s nothing better than a proper meal. Amsterdam is full of a lot of fast food options, and we always found it hard to find good places to sit down. So when our friends Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano invited us to their steakhouse in the heart of the red light district, we had to go and we were really impressed by the food quality and the ambiance. Definitely one of our go to spots high or sober.

Pancakes Amsterdam

If you really want dutch pancakes, or are in the mood for some low key food, this place is pretty tasty. It’s really tiny, so it gets really crowded, but they have a good selection of both american and dutch pancakes.

Andenken Gallery

It’s always good to have something fun to do when you’re high, and looking at great art is on the top of our list. We met Hyland (the manager) at Art Basel in Miami last year and he was super cool. Their gallery has some of our favorite upcoming artists including Jaime Molina and Mendo Marie. We’re super proud to own some of their pieces and we’re super pumped to go back next time we’re in Amsterdam and see what new stuff they have.

Conservatorium Hotel

The best hotel in Amsterdam hands down. It’s really one of the best hotels that we’ve stayed at in the world. Beautiful design, great restaurants, and the rooms are super cool (some of them have dutch-style two floor lofts). It’s a great place to unwind after a long day of smoking and walking. There are cool little treats at every corner of the hotel, and it’s fun to get lost and discover random places to chill and look at the cool sculptures that are made out of old violins. Also, the excellent 24 hour room service is super key.
